FDA issues warning about Darwin’s raw cat food due to salmonella concerns

Salmonella is a concern for both pets and humans alike. Pets that consume food contaminated with salmonella can become sick, as well as humans that handle the contaminated food. Signs to look for if you’re wondering if your pet has salmonella poisoning are: they become lethargic, have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and/or vomiting.

While the products haven’t been recalled, the FDA has issued a warning regarding their purchase and use. A warning that Alliance doesn’t agree with. A rebuttal was released by Darwin’s on August 4th that read in part, “We believe the FDA’s request is wholly unnecessary; there are no pet health risks to address. We also believe the FDA’s request is based on flawed regulatory decision-making and have taken steps to make our position clear with the agency.” You can read the memo in its entirety here.

Regardless of where you fall on believing the FDA or Darwin’s, you should always take extra precautions when handling products that may be contaminated with salmonella. Make sure you do not feed your pets any of the recalled foods, nor should you handle it.
