What’s interesting with this recall is that the aerosol sprays aren’t actually supposed to contain any level of benzene. The release on the FDA’s website reads in part that, “unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can.”

Benzene is a known human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur orally, through the skin, and by inhalation. Inhalation and exposure through the skin are of course the most concerning for individuals utilizing the recalled products. Benzene has been linked to life-threatening cancers like leukemia, blood cancers, and blood disorders.

Retailers have been notified of the recall, and asked to remove the aerosol sprays from their shelves. Consumers that purchased these recalled products with an expiration date on or before August 2023 should discard them or return them to their retailer for a refund. At this time, no illnesses related to this recall have been reported.
