Sportmix pet food aflatoxin recall expanded
Less than a month ago, Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. issued a recall of theri Sportmix dog food due to unsafe aflatoxin levels. The recall has now been expanded by Midwestern to include all dog and cat food products crafted in their Chickasha Operations Facility with corn.
The recalled products were distributed to retailers nationally and online. They have an expiration date of “on or before July 9, 2022”. Products set to expire after July 9, 2022 are not part of this recall. While there have not been any reported illnesses in humans coming in contact with the recalled pet food, there have unfortunately been a number of dogs that have gotten sick. Some sicknesses have even resulted in death.
According to the FDA, if you’re unsure if your pet may be suffering from aflatoxin poisoning the symptoms include: sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting jaundice (yellowish tint to the eyes, gums, or skin due to liver damage), and/or diarrhea, contact a veterinarian immediately. If you’re unsure about if your pet’s food has been recalled, it’s important to note that as the FDA states, “this recall covers ONLY products manufactured at Midwestern Pet Foods Chickasha, Oklahoma facility. Note that the unique Chickasha Facility identifier is located in the date code as a “05” and “REG. OK‐PFO‐0005” at the end of the date code. A complete list of the recalled products can be found at the bottom of this post
