Now serving PFAS burrito bowls, only at Chipotle

You know your order by heart. Heck, so does the cashier. After all, you’re in Chipotle 3 times a week. Barbacao, white rice, pinto beans, corn salsa, lettuce, cheese, and sour cream. It’s what you always get! According to a new study though, your favorite Chipotle bowl might now come with toxins linked to cancer.

New Food Economy conducted tests on Chipotle’s bowls and found they contained the “forever toxins” known as Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). The chemicals used “do not break down in the human body and they can accumulate over time…” according to the Environmental Protection Agency. When the bowls containing PFAS are discarded, the chemicals make their way into our soil as well.

In response to the findings, Chipotle released a statement that reads:

“We are committed to using safe and sustainable food packaging and only partner with suppliers who make fluorochemical sciences and food safety a top priority. These suppliers operate under strict guidelines set forth by the FDA, and have all provided chipotle with certification that all raw material and finished pulp products fully meet regulatory requirements.”
