Ordering Pizza? Chemicals in the Pizza Box are not Safe, says FDA

Mmmm… pizza. You love it, I love it, we all love it. But according to the FDA, when we pick up our pizza or have it delivered, the box it comes in may contain toxic chemicals. The toxins are considered so harmful, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has decided to ban the use of those chemicals. The chemicals are used to pizza boxes and popcorn bags resistant to oil and water. The law banned “three specific types of perfluoroalkyl ethyl containing food-contact substances (FCSs) as oil and water repellant for paperboards or paper.” FCSs have been linked to reproductive and developmental toxicity, and there are concerns linking them an increase in birth defects. While the removal of the harmful toxins is considered a great first step, advocates would like to see more done. Erik Olson of the NRDC hopes the FDA will take further steps to remove seven additional chemicals the National Institutes of Health have found – cause cancer.”
