How Paint Poisons Us and How to Avoid It

Before too long, 2015 will be gone and 2016 will be here. And with a New Year, often comes New Year’s resolutions. One popular resolution is to make changes to the home, and this often includes painting one or more rooms. And while painting our homes can be a fun undertaking, if you aren’t careful it could be a dangerous one. We have all heard of the dangers associated with using lead based paints, unfortunately using “lead-free” paints may not be as safe as many of us expect. Toxic chemicals such as “acetone, xylene, toluene, and benzene” are found in paint and common paint products. What’s most concerning is that these toxic chemicals are most dangerous for children. While some paint manufacturers list “zero” VOCs in their paints, the number doesn’t have to actually be zero. Instead the number of VOCs simply has to stay below a certain threshold. When choosing paint for your home, the best bet is to choose a non-toxic paint.
