Fancy Juice Doesn’t Cleanse the Body of Toxins
Chances are you’ve had more than a few people tell you they’re “on a juice cleanse” to rid their body of toxins. Here’s a little secret though, there’s very little chance their juice cleanse is ridding their body of any toxins. In fact, Dr. James H. Grendell, the chief of the division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. is quoted as saying, “there is no good scientific evidence that a juice cleanse, or any other food for that matter, is particularly relevant to removing toxins…” The kidneys and liver play a vital role in the removal of toxins from the body by drawing toxins out of the blood stream, and ensure they are excreted as feces and urine. This doesn’t mean drinking juices isn’t good for our bodies, Dr. Grendell states “that drinking vitamin-rich, antioxidant-filled vegetable juice [can] be beneficial for one’s health… or function as an effective tool for weight loss or resetting one’s habits.” So while expensive juices in a bottle won’t “rid your body of toxins”, there are definitely benefits to consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables.
