The presence of Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeria. As the FDA explains it, young and healthy adults suffering from listeria may only experience symptoms like “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.” Listeria is extremely concerning though for children, the elderly, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Listeria has been known to cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
The recalled products were delivered to Walmart and RaceTrac stores from 9-23-2020 through 9-25-2020. The affected retailers are removing the recalled products from their shelves. If you’ve purchased any of the recalled watermelon chunks, you should discard them or return them to your retailer for a refund.
