Contaminating Our Bodies With Everyday Products

It seems as though on a weekly basis we are learning more and more about the dangers of certain toxic chemicals. These are chemicals that have been linked to “prostate cancer, genital deformities, obesity, diabetes and infertility.” Yet, companies that that have a stake in these toxic chemicals continue to push pack against reasonable regulation. The fight against companies dealing in toxic chemicals is starting to resemble the ongoing fight against “Big Tobacco”. The Endocrine Society and other organizations have all recently issued warnings about the harmful effects of exposure to certain toxins. According to the Endocrine Society, “Emerging evidence ties endocrine-disrupting chemical exposure to two of the biggest public health threats facing society — diabetes and obesity…” A major concern for the public is the belief that all chemicals are tested for safety before they are used in products, when in actuality “most are assumed to be safe unless proved otherwise.” With the dangers toxic chemicals pose, and the proper regulation lacking, the best way to protect to protect yourself and your family is to “try to eat organic, reduce the use of plastics, touch cash register receipts as little as possible, try to avoid flame-retardant couches…”
