Over the last few years antibacterial soap has become all the rage, but serious concerns are now being raised over the chemicals used in some of the most popular antibacterial soap brands. In fact, by 2017 antibacterial soaps will be illegal in the state of Minnesota. The concern is over a chemical called “triclosan” that is used in roughly 75% of antibacterial soaps produced today. Triclosan is “believed to disrupt thyroid function and hormone levels in people” when mixed into wastewater. If your family is going to use an antibacterial soap “pick one that’s alcohol based and doesn’t list triclosan, triclocarban, or other chemicals described as ‘antimicrobial’ or ‘antibacterial’ on the label.”
